building the austin coffee table

Big Black Walnut the size of which was needed for this project is rare to find, with a majority of it being on either coast. After weeks of calls and searching, I decided upon Goby Walnut and made the trip across the country to pick out the slab. This hands-on approach to wood selection is important for a number of reasons:

1) it ensures that the wood is perfectly suited for the project at hand;

2) any imperfections in the wood that were not seen in the image can be assessed on-site and a new selection can be made if needed.

Goby Walnut was an impressive facility with great staff and they were a pleasure to work with. After my time there, I drove the Portland area hitting Mt. Hood and the Pacific coast all before heading back to corn country.
